Impro and the early European Theatre Avantgardes
Dr. Gunter Lösel
In this presentation Gunter Lösel, theatre-researcher at the Zurich University of the Arts, will give an introduction to the “hidden roots of improvisation” – the connection to the European Theatre Avantgardes at the beginning of the 20th century. He will challenge the popular misconception that modern improvisational theatre is the successor of the Commedia del `Arte and draw connecting lines to proclaimed “theatre revolutions” instead. He will explore which of their claims are still valid today and what this means for the theatre in general and for improvisational theatre, raising awareness for the radical beginnings and their impact on improvisational theatre as a contemporary theatrical movement.
